Constructions with expanded polystyrene become rigid because of an outer layer made out of this thermoset polymer known worldwide as epoxy resin.
The results can be seen specially in watercrafts and all kind of water-related products, as it is highly resistant to it.
Nonetheless, epoxy resin is not the last layer of the coating, as it would be negatively affected by ultraviolet light exposure (UV). To avoid this, an additional layer of coating is applied, usually varnish or polyurethane-based paints that protect against UV light.
