Appletree Surfboards

Appletree Surfboards
Appletree Surfboards was born in 2006 when Wieger Buurman began shaping surfboards in an old shed on his parents' apple orchard in the Netherlands. His surfer friends showed interest, which led to the creation of the brand. In 2010, his brother Jorrit joined him, and together they experimented with technologies to improve the durability of the boards. In 2014, they built their first CNC machine and developed the vacuum infusion technique—a breakthrough that made their boards much more resistant and allowed them to envision a professional future as board builders. In 2016, they opened their first proper factory in Rijswijk, expanded the team, and introduced the boards to the public.

As the company grew, Appletree incorporated sustainable practices: in 2018, they obtained the Eco Board certification from Sustainable Surf and began producing for other brands. In 2019, they moved to Portugal to expand and create the cleanest possible surfboard factory. In 2021, they purchased a larger building in Portugal to design a custom factory, and in 2022, they began implementing environmental and social commitments, such as recycling foam waste, improving working conditions, and adopting solar energy. In 2023, they committed to aligning with European sustainability directives (CSRD/ESRS) for greater transparency, and in 2024, they introduced the Digital Product Passport via NFC on all boards, providing material information and promoting a more circular economy. The brand has evolved from a humble shed to leading in technological innovation and sustainability in the world of surfing and water sports.
